Ofsted judged one in five schools to be inadequate in music during the period 2008-11, based on just under 200 subject inspections, which saw them focus on classroom and extra-curricular activity. The Ofsted report, Music in schools: wider still and wider, clearly states what is expected of schools, and it's well worth taking time to read through the findings both to flag up current strengths and to inform future action planning. If time is short, take a look at the summary document which condenses the 60 page report (plus appendices) into 3½ sides of salient points.
The accompanying case studies, consisting of text documents and video content, exemplify good practice in a range of different school profiles (see Ofsted site, or watch one example on left).
